“The Ballroom Blitz” / “Rock & Roll Disgrace” (RCA Victor 2403) September 1973
The arrival of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman in the career of The Sweet revolutionised the band’s prospects, with the Chinnichap chaps writing and producing a sequence of songs where bubblegum met heavy metal glam.
The hits kept coming from ‘Funny Funny’ through to the first Number 1 ‘Blockbuster’, and ‘The Ballroom Blitz’.
There was a blitzkrieg of a break with Chinn and Chapman in 1974, after which the Sweet wrote their own US Top 10 hit, ‘Fox’, but never regained their former success.
Up until this single I would have counted The Sweet on the Shortest Shortlist of despised and unlistenable bands . . . whatever this sounds like it’s the record that gave me the biggest smile and the best night of the week. (Sounds, September 1973)
