“Without You” / “Gotta Get Up” (RCA Victor RCA 2165) February 1972
“Without You” was an epic ballad, full of extremely emotive vocals and crashing piano chords. Although Nilsson was an accomplished songwriter this was a joint effort from Peter Ham and Tom Evans.
The song itself was simple enough, but Nilsson added an element of psycho drama to the tale of lost love and the ensuing meaningless life. It stopped just short of open weeping. It was, unsurprisingly, his biggest hit.
No trouble with Harry: the ace song writer and performer proves his point . . . . while reminding me of some of Roy Orbison’s early work, without Roy’s excessively tragic overtones. (Chris Welch, Melody Maker, January 1972)
