DAVID CASSIDY

David Cassidy | Forever | (Sounds Superb) | Though it was the “Partridge Family” TV show which first carried David Cassidy to international stardom, it is his own music ability and personality which have turned him into one of the true pop ‘superstars’ of the Seventies engendering the kind of fan worship only previously granted to Elvis Presley and the Beatles.

Cassidy was very much at the heart of the whole teeny-bopper phenomenon which brought colour and life back into the Seventies pop scene. His ability to work audiences into frenzy with his on-stage dynamism was matched by the quality of his hit recordings, for here we found an idol who wasn’t just a pretty face but could really sing as well.

Ballads like “Cherish” revealed David’s ability to really bring a lyric to life, while on the raunchy “Rock Me Baby” he provided an answer to those critics who said he couldn’t be compared creatively with the current crop of rock artists. That record wasn’t just a great pop hit, it ranks as one of the best rock records of the past few years and undoubtedly, if it hadn’t had David’s name on the label the self-appointed pundits would unreservedly have acclaimed it as such.

Nor is full-voiced emotive singing David’s only forte. He’s also an accomplished actor, as “The Partridge Family” proved and he has produced several of his own records, notably “If I Didn’t Care” and the live version of the Beatles’ “Please Please Me” with which he rocked the sell-out White City concert.

David Cassidy has a happy knack of coming up with the right songs – he used the services of many top writers, from his own producer Wes Farrell to Lennon McCartney, Felix Cavaliere Eddie Brigati and Tony Romeo – and then giving them his own distinctive stamp.

This album shows what Cassidy’s appeal is all about for, behind the fan mania, the whole industry of David Cassidy posters, T-shirts, pennants, pillow-slips and lockets, the concerts full of screaming girls and the massive media exposure lies a remarkable talent who, like Elvis Presley and the Beatles before him shows every sign of being able to grow up alongside audience and maintain his appeal.
