Taken from the LP ‘The Best Of The Righteous Brothers’ | (Metro Records 2356024) 1972
This is my introduction into the music of the Righteous Brothers and my lasting impression is that the duo over-sang on the tedious over-the-top ballads and the Brother handling the low notes had a voice sounding as deep as rolling thunder.
The material on offer gathers up some of their 1965 to 1968 single A-sides, a couple of B-sides and some numbers that I’m presuming ended up on studio albums.
This is music for squares and couples down the local Darby & Joan Club. The only time my cockles got a little flushed was with “My Darling Clementine” and (for them) stirring renditions of “Hold On I’m Comin’” and “In The Midnight Hour” from 1967.
I’m sure I can detect some subtle fuzz guitar on ‘Midnight Hour’ and it’s probably the best cut on this 12-track sampler.
