“You’re Sixteen” / “Devil Woman” (Apple R 5995) February 1974
When the Beatles split in 1970, pundits thought Ringo was ‘least likely to succeed’ since he’d contributed little in the way of songwriting, his vocal range was limited and even his drumming was a tad lacking.
Ringo proved the prophets of doom wrong and ran up a string of US hits, including “Oh My My”, “Photograph” and this reworking of a 1960 Johnny Burnette number,a piece of fun with Harry Nilsson adding vocal backing and Paul McCartney on kazoo.
The chances are that few sounds readers will be elderly enough to remember Johnny Burnette’s earlier (much earlier) hit. Ringo takes it pretty straight, with a gang of backing singers standing by to smooth off the rough edges. (John Peel, Sounds, February 1974)
