The Rolling Stones | “Angie” | Rolling Stones

“Angie” / “Silver Train” (Rolling Stones RS 19105) September 1973

“Angie”, an aching tender-ballad of love on the rocks, was similar to early Stones singles releases such as “Ruby Tuesday” and “Lady Jane” – less of the Southern blues-rock idiom than something that might be more at home in St John’s Wood.

Much to the surprise of many critics, “Angie” shot to the top of the US charts and reached Number 5 in the UK.

It is my considered opinion that “Angie” is one of the best vocal performances from Mick Jagger on record. Imbued with expression and emotion, he puts heart and soul into the laid back ballad, giving the lyrics full attention. (Chris Welch, Melody Maker, August 1973)
