“Summer In The City” / “Bald Headed Lena” (Kama Sutra KAS 200) July 1966
The American / Canadian Lovin’ Spoonful combined the jangle of the British Beatles with the electric energy of the Greenwich village folk scene.
John Sebastian was a fine songwriter, and his warm, clear singing made “Summer In The City” an atmospheric word painting of New York City on a warm sunny day.
Street noises and booming drums added to the appeal. The members of the Spoonful auditioned for the roles of The Monkees, but did not get them.
Tremendous sound-painting from The Spoonful. There is a powerful organ, drums and guitar, dramatic breaks and clever use of effects, including car horns and pneumatic drills. (Melody Maker, July 1966)
