“Mouldy Old Dough” / “The Villain” (Decca F.13278) February 1972
Stavely Makepeace was formed by three school boys in Coventry. They released one unsuccessful single “Edna”, and thought that a change of name would help their careers.
They plumped for Lieutenant Pigeon and recorded “Mouldy Old Dough”. The single took almost eight months to reach the top of the charts, and had almost no vocals except for the words ‘mouldy old dough’ repeated over and over again, and was recorded in a front room. Their next single was “Desperate Dan.”
Hilda’s front room in her semi in Coventry was the scene of the crime. We didn’t use the best equipment – it was recorded on a domestic machine. We find we get a better sound using the front room. (Nigel Fletcher (drummer) talking to Julie Webb, NME, October 1972)
