“You Beat Me To The Punch” taken from the LP ‘Greatest Hits’ (Sounds Superb SPR 90008) 1973
Mary Wells | Greatest Hits | (Sounds Superb) | Born on the 13th May 1943, Mary Wells received no formal training in music, but soon became featured soloist at Northwestern High School, noted for its out-standing choir.
When she was 18 she took a song she had written to one of the regular Friday afternoon auditions held at the studios of the famous Motown Record Corporation. With Berry Gordy, Motown President, accompanying her on the piano, Mary sang her composition: Gordy was immediately struck by the quality of the song . . . and the singer, and within weeks “Bye-Bye, Baby”, recorded by Mary, was high in the U.S. charts, where it remained for eight months.
This first release was followed into the top sellers lists by subsequent recordings, and Mary soon found herself one of the artists touring with the “Motown Revue”.
Then in 1964 “My Guy” shot to the top of the American hit parade, and also achieved instant success in the United Kingdom and Europe, bringing Mary to the attention of an international audience. The record has continued to sell in substantial quantities since then, and in 1972 once more climbed high into the British Top Twenty.
On this album the Wells magic is applied to some classic standards and personal favourites, all of which bear the distinctive quality of interpretation which took “My Guy” into the world charts, and made Mary Wells a star.
