Miguel Ramos | Y Su Organo Hammond | (Hispavox) | Spanish organist and arranger, often referred to as Miguel Ramos Y Su Orquesta.

Miguel Ramos was born in Spain around 1910 and died around 1978. During the Spanish civil war he expatriate to France where he lived in exile until the mid-sixties. Here he became famous as Michel Ramos and using the female pseudonyms Virginie Morgan and Patricia Lamour. Returned to Spain in the sixties, Ramos took control of the Spanish label Hispavox, becoming its main arranger.

This album, as expected, is for squares and the over-sixties who like things lite and easy-on-the-ear. Miguel has a way to make his Hammond organ sound like musak you’d hear in lifts or over supermarket speakers as background noise while you’re dipping into fridges for nut cutlets and ice cream.

Tunes given his treatment include “Winchester Cathedral,” “Monday Monday,” “Massachusetts,” and “Congratulations.” My pick is “San Francisco,” which is not so much flowers, love and peace but darning, putting the kettle on and ironing your socks.
