“Sunny” taken from the album ‘Sixties Flashback’ (Polystar EYETV 3) 1980

A varied 20-song compilation of sixties hits from the turn of the 60s, The Tornados “Telstar” right up to the end of the decade with Thunderclap Newman‘s “Something In The Air”. It’s the kind of radio friendly numbers that were played as background music on TV series “Heartbeat.”

When I first saw this LP in the charity shop I immediately thought that they were budget label remakes, but I was wrong, everything is by the original artist. Checking Discogs it appears that the Polystar label operated out of Germany and their records were sold through television advertisements.

Wonderfully tacky ‘number’ sleeve. It’s a great selection, with lots of Track records artists, and factory-farmed-for-comps (but great) artists like Small Faces -I think a lot of these were on Pye, who seemed like the most remorseless label ever in terms of cash-in reissues and budget comps. from Telstar to Purple Haze is quite a span, but this kind of comp would never be so pretentious as to purport to illustrate the evolution of rock. No concept beyond ‘Flashback! 20 Great Hits’

I often feel that Record Collector mag ought to run an in-depth feature on budget-label re-recordings ‘by the original artist’ – one or two of them are even good! I’d love to know the who, where, when and why. I ownder if the Troggs were trying to get their own back by re-recording a big chunk of their repertoire, which proliferated in a huge number og releases, muddying the water of tehir legacy, but no doubt a nice payday, until REM and Wet x3 come to the rescue. Admittedly, I am prob the only person who is interested …
